Holy Week and Pascha 2014: Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Pittsburgh, PA

The community of Holy Cross, located in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, embraces it diverse ethnic and large youth congregation as we follow Christ’s steps to Golgotha, the tomb and resurrection. Following liturgy on Lazarus Saturday, the JOY group and acolytes prepare palm crosses and clean the church followed by confession. One of our Coptic Egyptian parishioners has taught the youth to weave elaborate fans from palms that are used in the Palm Sunday procession. On Holy Thursday, the GOYA participate in an all-night vigil at the cross of Christ while the book of Psalms are read all night. Other evening activities include a heart-wrenching presentation on the detailed medical sufferings of Christ by an Orthodox physician and the preparation of 150 bag lunches for distribution to the homeless people of our city. On Good Friday, Metropolitan Savas blessed us with his presence and talked to us about the Old Testament roots of Pascha. Eighteen girls between the ages of 8-12 volunteered to be myrophores during the Holy Friday procession. Many Slavic parishioners bring elaborate baskets of food to be blessed following the Anastasi liturgy. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us “The table is rich-laden: feast royally, all of you.” In that spirit, the fast was broken with an Agape lamb meal that was open to all parishioners free of charge courtesy of the parish council.
Christ is Risen! Truly He has Risen!
